Online marketers use numerous social media platforms to spread brand awareness, advertise products and interact with customers, but they say some social networks are far more important than others.

According to a recent survey by the Creative Group, a staffing firm for design, marketing, advertising and public relations professionals, 56 percent of advertising and marketing executives would choose Facebook if they were limited to only one social network.

"Those in the creative industry tend to blend their professional and personal lives, including interactions they have online," said Donna Farrugia, executive director of the Creative Group. "Social media profiles have become an important branding and marketing tool for creative professionals."

Marketing and advertising executives also revealed some common mistakes employees in the creative industry make on their professional social network profiles. Twenty-nine percent of respondents said failing to regularly update content is the most frequent mistake, 24 percent said it's providing too much unnecessary information and 18 percent said publishing inappropriate content is the most common error.

Twenty-one percent of executives cited LinkedIn as the social network they would choose if forced to use only one, while 12 percent said Google+ and 4 percent said Twitter.

Facebook has become an essential tool in online marketing for small businesses, as 70 percent of them use the social network and 25.3 percent update their profiles multiple times per day, according to a recent survey.
